Rude Boys & Rude Girls

"This is england" is a MUST-SEE! I've seen it a million times now but I'm always happy to watch it again. The music is fantastic, the characters, brilliant and the story, well, deeply moving...

I am also quite fond of the rude girls/rude boys style!

I love men who wear Fred Perry polos over big tats and braces. I love seeing girls in checked shirts and fishnet tights, gingham shirts and low boots.

The only thing for the ladies is the haircut. I just....don't get it. Definitely love the short fringe as I wore it myself but the short-haired skull with locks at the front is really not my cup of tea. It even beats the mullet.

"This is england" est à voir ABSOLUMENT!! J'ai bien du le voir un million de fois mais je suis toujours contente de le re-regarder. La musique est géniale, les personnages super attachants et l'histoire... très touchante....

Je dois avouer que j'ai aussi un petit faible pour le style rude girls/rude boys!
J'adore ces bad boys tatoués qui portent des bretelles sur leurs polos Fred Perry. J'adore voir ces filles qui portent ces jupes à damier avec des résilles, des chemises vichy et des low boots.

La seule chose qui cloche c'est la coupe. Je...comprends pas....

J'adore la mini frange, l'ayant moi-même portée mais le crâne rasé avec des grosses mèches devant, c'est pas trop mon truc. Même la queue de rat a côté c'est tendance.

Paris

Tomorrow evening, I'm off to France for a week. Time to see my family & friends I miss so badly, even if it is still going to be too short... I'll be the guide for me Irish as well, who wants to go to the Louvres, le Jardin des Plantes and Versailles, eat some Frog's legs, go for a "Bateau-mouche" ride on the Seine... and co.

Demain soir, départ pour la France. Une semaine pour profiter de ma famille et de mes amis qui me manquent terriblement, même si je sais déjà que ce sera trop court... Je ferai aussi office de guide pour mon irlandais qui veut aller au Louvre, au jardin des plantes et à Versailles, manger des cuisses de grenouille, faire une balade en bateau-mouche sur la seine... etc.

I will also go to the exhibition about Jazz at the Quai Branly Museum: "Le Siècle du Jazz". In fact, I've never been there since it opened a few years ago.

The picture above represents the protagonist of Ralph Ellison's best-seller book called "Invisible Man". I remember that I had to read it for my 4th year at the university and that it actually didn't really struck me... Nevertheless I remember that helpless character in the prologue, alone and in pain... a black man settling down into a basement section, stealing electricity from the company to light his room, which he has lined with 1369 bulbs., and listening to Louis Armstrong song "(What did I do to be so ) Black and Blue"....

J'irai aussi voir l'expo "Le siècle du Jazz" au musée du quai Branly. A vrai dire, je n'y suis jamais allée depuis son ouverture.

La photo ci-dessus représente le personnage principal du best-seller de Ralph Ellison intitulé "Homme invisible, pour qui chantes-tu?". Je ma rappelle l'avoir lu, un peu forcée, en 4ème année et ne pas avoir été bouleversée par ce bouquin....et pourtant, je me souviens de ce personnage en détresse et meurtri... un homme noir qui s'installe dans une cave et qui détourne l'électricité de la ville pour éclairer sa chambre de 1369 ampoules, en écoutant du Louis Armstrong en boucle...

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, I just felt like there wasn't much to tell you about this week...

Not much till yesterday anyway, when I stumbled upon a BBC TV documentary about The Legend Johnny Cash. Having been a huge fan of the man and his music for years now, I just couldn't get my eyes out of the screen...

Désolée pour le peu d'articles postés dernièrement, j'avais juste peu de choses intéressantes à partager avec vous cette semaine... si ce n'est pour ce documentaire télévisé sur lequel je suis tombée hier à propos de la Légende Johnny Cash. Je l'aime tellement que je ne pouvais décemment pas passer à côté de ce documentaire! impossible de décrocher, j'avais les yeux rivés sur l'écran...

Indeed, the quality of the documentary which aimed at telling the story of the man, his relation to Music, his Love stories and family, was aboslutely amazing... Always humble - never cheesy.

En effet, ce reportage était vraiment de qualité: pas cul-cul, mais authentique et simple. Tout au long, on y découvre les témoignages de ceux qui ont partagé sa vie, de certains membres de sa famille comme son fils et deux de ses filles, de ses musiciens et amis les plus fidèles ou encore d'artistes sacralisant son personnage, et son oeuvre.

There were plenty of genuine interviews with his son John and daughters Cindy & Rosanne, with his close friends and musicians, or singers like Sheryl Crow, who really knew or got to know him and still have a deep love and respect for him.

Here's one extract from the documentary, including One of Johnny Cash's last songs called "Hurt". I was deeply moved in the end, and couldn't help weeping... :-) *yeah I know*

Everybody knows the Andrew Sisters eh??

They were a singing trio of close harmony consisting of sisters LaVerne Sophie Andrews, Maxene Angelyn Andrews , and Patricia Marie (a.k.a. Patty) Andrews, who had a huge success from the 30s, then through and after WW2 ...





At the time, these ladies represented the girls next door. They were seen as very accessible and friendly, but still had that glamourous image in which housewives could recognize themselves and which influenced them...and obviously, men would go crazy...

I am no specialist. But what I can say is that the Andrew Sisters had a huge impact in the history of music.


Take a look at the The Puppini sisters for example. A huge phenomenon since they appeared in 2003. Of course we've seen a revival of pin-up glamour and burlesque like never before seen, which may have helped. But how successful they are!!

My sister is a professional singer and has been so for 20 years now. Her influences and style come from Soul, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Bossa Nova, and French Music in general.

I've always been really proud of her, for God knows how hard and challenging making a living as a singer can be.

But she did it. she proved to have a real talent and a will, few people have. She didn't make it as a "star" for many reasons, choosing a family life being one, meeting nasty people being another.

But she loves her job and feels complete. What could be more important than Sanity and Happiness?

In late 2007, she founded the Swing sisters, among other projects.





She's not particularly into 40s music, but had always found close harmony vocal music really interesting.

Their show is set by now, choregraphies and rehearsals being finished.

They made a contribution to a French radio show in november 2008
